If you grew up in an American city such as Tucson or somewhere similar in size and speed, it wouldn’t be unfathomable to think that Italian food meant lasagna, pizza, pasta, and red sauce. Throw in the red checked tablecloths and for the majority, this probably sums up most people’s Italian food experience.
It’s a hard stereotype to break, but fortunately a handful of Italian restaurants are offering an experience that not only debunks, but rivals this expectation. Granted, there’s nothing wrong with lasagna, pizza, pasta, and red sauce. In fact, when prepared right, it brings a whole new reality to what Italian food is and what’s possible.
Tavolino is one of those restaurants. You can still order lasagna – or as they call it Lasagna al Forno – but it will rival your expectations, as will their pasta and award-winning pizza. But really, branch out a little and try some things you might not have in the past, like the Pappardelle al Pesto e Fagiolini, which is homemade pasta with fresh basil and green beans, or Filetto de Maiale, a prosciutto wrapped pork tenderloin in a red wine reduction sauce served with roasted potatoes and baby spinach.
