Batch Cafe & Bar, which opened in January 2016, is a newcomer to the busy stretch of East Congress Street that’s also home to Proper, Diablo Burger, Hotel Congress, Elvira’s, and one of Batch’s owners first concepts, HUB Restaurant & Ice Creamery. Batch has managed to stand out from the crowd by focusing on a few specific things: donuts, grilled cheese, and whiskey.
Batch’s donuts are made from Alvernon Donuts dough and finished off in-house with a creative flair. You can order a donut filled with bourbon cream and topped with chocolate frosting and bacon; sprinkled with favorite cereals like cocoa puffs and fruity pebbles; or covered in chocolate, peanut butter, and crushed Oreos.
The grilled cheese menu boasts hearty favorites, including a Tuscan tuna and a pastrami and swiss, alongside unique combinations like the Mollie—a combination of goat cheese, apricot jam, honey, and thyme. Batch recently introduced a new menu of “Boozy Cereals,” including the Paddy Jacks—Irish whiskey, applejacks, apple-pie filling, and whole milk.
The bar side of the business offers dozens of varieties of whiskey and bourbon sourced from places as far-flung as Ireland, Scotland and Japan. For patrons who prefer hops over corn and rye, Batch also has a selection of beers on tap.
The café and bar is located in a rustic-meets-industrial space with brick walls, a stainless steel bar, and clever touches like chandeliers made of empty whiskey bottles. It also has a patio, so patrons can enjoy their drinks while people watching or basking in the warm desert air.
