Café 54 is a restaurant with a mission—besides serving affordable, fresh eats, it also offers job training for individuals recovering from mental illness. These trainees work in all aspects of Café 54’s operation—as line and prep cooks, servers, cashiers, and dishwashers—and after they complete the program, Café 54 staff assit with job placement in one of Tucson’s many restaurants, cafés and cafeterias.
In addition, the trainees, as well as other Tucsonans currently enrolled in a behavioral health program, can also participate in Café 54’s art program, which provides supplies, framing, and matting to grantees. Café 54 regularly hangs this art on its rustic brick walls.
While Café 54’s unique and important mission draws customers in, they stick around for the food—which is served Monday through Friday from 11 am until 2 pm. The café has specials and features that rotate daily, as well as menu mainstays like the Turkey BLT and the Hero’s Gyro. Vegetarians can order the Malibu Veggie Burger or choose from the Greek, House, or Classic Caesar salads. Everything on the menu is $10 or less, a steal considering Café 54’s commitment to fresh ingredients and attentive preparations.
You can also hire Café 54 to cater your next lunch meeting or big event. They offer five different catering menus: lunch, dinner, breakfast platters, appetizers and dessert. The appetizers menu, which includes classics like fried ravioli as well as healthful options like vegetable crudités and Mediterranean bruschetta, is a particularly crowd-pleasing choice.
