Johnny Gibson’s—on South 6th Avenue just off Congress—is a market and eatery where customers can find everything from organic produce to craft beer to a wedding cake. It has a myriad of prepared food options, including deli sandwiches and a breakfast bar.
The bright, airy market is the first grocery store to open downtown in nearly fifty years, and its grocery selection is focused on the local and organic. Shoppers can pick up regional favorites, including Arbuckle Coffee Co. beans and Tucson Tamale Co. tamales. There’s also a meat and cheese counter and a bakery section stocked with mouth-watering treats like cream puffs.
Guests who want to dine in can choose from yogurt, granola, fruit, breakfast burritos and egg sandwiches in the morning; and sandwiches, soup, and salad from lunch onward. Favorite sandwiches include the Roasted Veggie—with two kind of peppers (poblano and red), hummus, onion, blistered tomato, mozzarella and a choice of spread—and the Wildcat—with turkey, herb cream cheese, avocado, onion-bacon spread, onion, lettuce and tomato. There are two seating areas: an indoor one at the front of the store and a patio out back, where guests can drink beer and wine purchased at the market.
History buffs might be interested to know that the market is named after Johnny Gibson, who had a barber shop on South 6th and was well-known in Tucson for his commitment to fitness—he was a weightlifter and designed exercise equipment. Gibson passed away in 2010, at the age of eight-nine, but he remains a beloved part of downtown Tucson’s history.
