El Charro Café is now cooking up a special 99th Anniversary menu

Mar 2, 20212 min read

Some say they’ve got 99 problems, others are planning to party like it’s 1999, but this Tucson staple is simply ready to celebrate 99 years of feeding the community.

As the 100th Anniversary of El Charro Café creeps closer, the Flores family has mapped out two year’s worth of commemorative activities.

First up: a 99th-anniversary menu that’s available now until May 2021.

The menu is currently lighting up the kitchen at all El Charro Café locations and features a tasty blend of vintage and current classics. You’ve got your choice of 99th Aniversario Rellenos, AZ Bowls, Pollo Pipian Enchiladas, and more.

El Charro Café 99th Anniversary Menu

  • Combo #Ninety-Nine – A collection of recipes from years past and present including a pollo pipian enchilada topped with mole pipian, queso casero, toasted pepitas, and fresh avocado with handmade corn tamal prepared quesabirria style with new slow cooked Charro Birria Rojo, queso casero, and pico salsa. Served with sides of roasted corn esquites, arroz, and frijoles
  • 99th Aniversario Rellenos – Roasted poblano stuffed with choice of chicken or famous Carne Seca and finished in our house recipe green chile “raja” crema. Garnished with fresh avocado corn salsa and cilantro. Served with sides of roasted corn esquites, arroz, and frijoles
  • Fajita Chicken
  • El Charro Carne Seca
  • AZ BowlsGF – Filled with delicious arroz Sonora, frijoles charros, roasted corn esquites, and topped with fresh avocado, queso casero and pico de charro, and your choice of Chicken Tinga or New Charro Birria Rojo

Tamales of The Month

Oh, and the special menu isn’t all. There’s more up their sleeve for their 99th anniversary.

Additional plans include an anniversary commemorative book, an animated piece, and special monthly celebrations at all locations on specific dates and holidays. Some of these holidays are National Margarita Day, Cinco de Mayo, National Tequila Day, National Chimichanga Day, and plenty of others.

Flores Concepts restaurants are all “Ready for You” certified restaurants and they’ve been utilizing their own “100 point plan” designed to guide their restaurants’ rapid response to the pandemic.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

After 4pm, @Talegacoffee at 177 N. Church Ave. transforms into @_Velvetcowboy, serving cocktails, tapas, and late-night bar energy. Velvet Cowboy’s grand opening is Oct. 16, with upcoming events including drag brunches, DJs, and live music.🪩

This weekend’s hours are Saturday from 2pm to midnight and Sunday from noon to 10pm. Featured in this video is the Chilte(penis) martini special, made with chiltepin vodka, agua de chiltepin, and pickle juice, available until they sell out.🍸

“Opening this place feels a little surreal. To now have a space where we can bring together coffee, food, art, booze, and all the weird things we love feels like a reflection of how far we’ve come.” —Tyler Melo
