Anthony Bourdain has a dream job for many folks, and while glamorous, it’s not as easy as it looks.

Saying that something “tastes good” is acceptable on a Yelp review, but it’s not descriptive food writing. Skillful food writing doesn’t only convey flavors, it also vividly shares memories and experiences.

To learn the craft from a seasoned professional, check out Edie Jarolim’s Introduction to Food Writing course at the Jewish Community Center from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on November 1, 8, 15, and 29.

Jarolim’s food articles have appeared in notable publications such as Edible Baja Arizona, Phoenix Magazine, Sunset, and Zagat. She’s also contributed to Tucson Foodie.

Classes are $85 for the general public, $75 for JCC members.

The Tucson Jewish Community Center is located at 3800 E. River Rd. For more information and to purchase tickets, call (520) 299-3000 or visit tucsonjcc.org.

Jackie Tran is a Tucson-based food writer, photographer, culinary educator, and owner-chef of the now-closed food truck Tran’s Fats. Although he is best known locally for his work for Tucson Foodie, his work has also appeared in publications such as Bon Appétit, National Geographic, and the New York Times.

An adventurous foodie, he enjoys culinary experiences ranging from seasonal omakase to sloppily devouring green chili patty melts in his car afterhours. His favorite foods include aguachile, garlic noodles, and leftover fried chicken illuminated by the fridge light. His favorite drinks include morning micheladas, fireside imperial stouts, candle-lit negroni, and grassy mezcales.

Outside of food, he also loves playing musical instruments, karaoke, Tetris, Super Smash Bros. Melee, and petting Addie’s dog Spaghetti.

Tucson’s barbecue options range from food trucks to full-service dining rooms. Some focus on classic Texas-style plates with butcher paper and simple sides. Others experiment with fusion dishes that blend barbecue with Mexican and Southwestern flavors. This variety gives diners plenty of options, whether they want a quick lunch or a sit-down meal.
