Spring in Tucson is the perfect time to enjoy a day outside enjoying cold beer, local food, lawn games and live music.

The Baja Beer Festival on April 23 will offer all of the above, with over 50 breweries and 200 beers to sample.

The inaugural festival is being organized by the same team behind the annual Top Hops beer festival and the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild.

“Nationally run beer event companies are not locally organized,” said Mike Mallozzi, owner of Borderlands Brewing Company and a member of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild. “Just like any other national company, the profits from these events leave Arizona. Locally run events, like the Baja Beer Festival, keep more money here in Tucson and Arizona by benefitting local non-profits and small businesses.”

Guests will have the opportunity to sample specialty brews created in collaboration between Arizona brewers with firefighters from across the state. These collaborative beers will also be judged by a panel of celebrity and home brewer judges.

Sentinel Peak will be one of the breweries participating in the collaborative brew competition. All three owners are still active firefighters.

“Not only are we firefighters, but we got our start and poured our first beer at Top Hops four years ago,” said owner Jeremy Hilderbrand. “As members of the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, we’re thrilled to see these two organizations join forces for Baja Beer Festival this year. It’s going to be a great time.”

Funds raised will go toward the Northwest Firefighters Charities’ Holiday Assistance Program, which provides food, clothes, and toys to Southern Arizona families. Funds will also support the Arizona Craft Brewers Guild, which seeks to promote the craft brewing industry in Arizona through education and legislation.

Baja Beer Festival will take place at the Rillito Park on April 23 from 4 to 9pm. General admission tickets are $40 and include 20 tasting tickets.

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
