Vegan Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser at Hop Street Lounge

Vegan Chili Cook-Off Fundraiser at Hop Street Lounge

Jan 3, 20201 min read

Here’s a neat event for those that love meatless chili or want to show off their meatless cooking skills, too.

Hop Street Lounge is hosting a Vegan Chili Cook-Off and fundraiser for Tucson CARES from noon – 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 11.

It’s heartwarming to know you’ll be providing comfort and support for savable cats and dogs that are homeless in Pima County. In turn, your loving contribution will be rewarded with several vegan chili samples, and an opportunity to vote on your favorites.

While you’re not eating, head over to the bar for one of the 34 rotating taps or to the eight-door refrigerator that’s stocked with bottles of wine and mead, seltzers, cold-brew coffees, and 700 different selections of canned beer.

Tickets are at $10 per person and that’ll get you one round of samples. If you’d like seconds, it’s just an extra $2. You can also enter the cook-off if you’re feeling competitive.

Don’t forget to vote, too. There’s going to be plenty of savory samples of chili to taste, so let them know which one is your favorite.

Hop Street Lounge is located at 7215 E 22nd St., Ste 101. For more information, visit Tucson CARES’ Facebook event page.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

When @ginzatucson opened in 2008, it became the first restaurant in Tucson to feature an izakaya style menu, bringing Japan’s popular shareable dining experience to the city. Today, it’s still the only restaurant in town with a dedicated izakaya menu, along with one of Tucson’s largest curated selections of sake, Japanese beer, and shochu.

In 2018, the couple expanded again with @raijinramen, Tucson’s first restaurant dedicated entirely to ramen. Known for its rich tonkotsu broths and seasonal specialties, Raijin helped pave the way for the city’s growing ramen scene.

From fresh fish flown in daily from Japan and California to chef’s choice omakase experiences, Ginza continues to showcase authentic Japanese cuisine while Jun and Diana regularly travel to Japan to bring back the latest culinary trends.

📍 Raijin Ramen: 2955 E. Speedway Blvd.
