In Tucson, local eaters are in a so-called hot dog heaven due to the number of tasty options out there, and as of late one of them is being recognized nationally.
El Guero Canelo has been included in Travel Magazine’s “10 Best Hot Dogs in the U.S.” list, coming in at number seven in the country.
The list consists of popular hot dogs from all over the country — a “perfect Chicago dog” coming in at number one — and here’s what Travel Magazine had to share about the legendary Sonoran Hot Dog:
“Walk into any restaurant in Arizona serving hot dogs and they will have a Sonoran-style hot dog on the menu. This style takes the all-American hot dog and adds some Mexican flare to it. And no one does the Sonoran-style hot dog better than El Guero Canelo. Your hot dog comes wrapped in bacon and topped with beans, grilled and fresh onions, tomatoes, mayo, mustard, and jalapeno sauce. If you’re feeling hungry, get the “Sammy dog” version, which is just two dogs instead of one.”
In 2018, The James Beard Foundation graced El Guero Canelo with its 2018 America’s Classics award. The award, first introduced in 1998, is “given to restaurants that have timeless appeal and are cherished for quality food that reflects the character of their community.”
If it’s been a while since you’ve sunken your teeth into a Sonoran Hot Dog, perhaps today is a good day to break the streak.
