The Tucson Jewish Community Center (also known as the Tucson J, or the J) is excited to announce its new dining experience, Bistro at the J by Asher. With just a few kosher dining options in Tucson, the pop-up was created with one goal: bringing the community together over delicious food and offering a unique dining experience inclusive of everyone.
The official grand opening will take place in the J’s ballroom on Thursday, January 19 from 5 – 8 .m. After that, the pop-up meals will happen every third Thursday of the month through April 2023.
“We were able to identify the need for something like this in Tucson, and are honored to be able to provide the space and support to make it happen,” said Todd Rockoff, the J’s President + CEO.
The expansive menu is prepared by chef Asher Amar, who is the owner of Cafe at the J and the previous owner of Fifth Street Kosher Deli + Market and Oy Vey Cafe.
Under the supervision of Rabbi Billy Lefkowitz includes meat entrees, vegetarian, gluten-free, and vegan options, and appetizers, as well as a dedicated kid’s menu. Also, they’ll have dessert options from Nadine’s Bakery, monthly specials, and crowd-pleasers like the Shawarma Plate, Ribeye Steak served with rice and veggies, Chicken Fajitas, and Matzo Ball Soup.
Over 50 people of all ages attended the soft launch in December 2022 and took part in eating the new bites, playing jumbo board games, and listening to music. This month, the pop-up will feature live entertainment from Stephen the Spectacular.
“The food was delicious, the service was fantastic, and getting to sit down and talk with members from the community was so much fun,” said Avi Erbst, who attended the soft launch.
“We wanted to take what we are able to offer at Cafe at the J every day and elevate it, providing our guests a fine-dining experience in a relaxed and communal environment where everyone feels welcome,” said Monica Rosenbaum, the J’s Senior Director of Operations. “We got really amazing feedback on the quality of the meals and service, as well as the ambiance, from guests who joined us in December. Some even stayed the entire evening, chatting with new acquaintances and just enjoying themselves.”
Reservations and pre-orders are recommended (walk-ins are also welcome) and can be made online until 2 p.m. the day of the event. Private and communal table seating or to-go options are also available.
