Tucked away in a strip mall north of a Circle K and east of Tucson Medical Center, the Quesadillas offers a steak taco that has quietly become an east side favorite. Owner Marcos Barragán, who opened the eatery in November 2015, focuses on delivering traditional flavors without the frills.
The steak taco features mesquite-grilled carne asada, seasoned simply with salt. The meat features tender, juicy bites perfumed with mesquite smoke. Served on house-made flour tortillas, the taco is adorned simply with fresh cilantro and diced white onion, allowing the quality of the meat to shine.
However, it would be remiss to neglect their fresh salsa bar. While they offer a wide variety of house-made salsas, the staff favorite includes the avocado salsa and chili oil.
Barragan designed the menu to highlight quesadillas, placing them at the forefront rather than as an afterthought. However, the steak taco has garnered its own following with its simplicity and expert execution.
The Quesadillas operates without advertising, relying solely on word of mouth and recommendations from press (like this article). However, their signature tacos and quesadillas gained enough traction for them to expand into the space next door with additional seating.
The Quesadillas is located at 2418 N. Craycroft Rd. and can be reached at (520) 296-1345. For more information, visit thequesadillas.com. Keep up with the Quesadillas on Instagram.
