Li’l Abner’s: Tucson’s Rustic Steakhouse That Feeds Generations

Tucked off North Silverbell Road, where once there was nothing but desert and open sky, sits a steakhouse that feels like stepping into another era. The property itself has roots in Marana’s Old West, having once served as a Butterfield Overland Stage stop in the 1880s for passengers and mail, and later as a cattle station. Li’l Abner’s Steakhouse opened in 1947, founded by Duchess and Larry Lewis, who named the restaurant after their dog Abner, inspired by the popular comic character.

Over the years, it evolved from a simple bar into a beloved steakhouse known for hearty portions and a welcoming, rustic vibe. In 1981, Tucson attorney David S. Hoffman purchased the restaurant, and it has remained in the Hoffman family ever since.

Rustic Charm and Timeless Atmosphere

From the moment you arrive, the rustic charm of the place is unmistakable. The scent of mesquite smoke from the outdoor grill drifts across the lot. The building’s unpretentious exterior sets the tone for what’s inside: a space that feels lived-in, welcoming, and deeply connected to Marana’s past. Worn wood beams line the ceilings, and walls are adorned with vintage photos, eclectic memorabilia, ranching gear, license plates, and even graffiti left by generations of guests. Each mark tells a story, layering decades of history into the atmosphere.

The People Who Make It Home

Part of what gives Li’l Abner’s its enduring appeal is the people who have made it their second home. General manager Connie Gibbon and bartender Shawn Bell have been fixtures at the restaurant since the 1980s, their decades of dedication visible in every interaction.

“We’ve kept the food good quality, the cowboy steak, it’s real food, nothing microwaved,” Gibbon said. “It’s the kind of meal people remember.”

If a dish isn’t cooked exactly right, Gibbon and the staff will always make another one, ensuring every guest leaves satisfied.

Bell says the longtime staff help shape the welcoming atmosphere.

“We have girls with personalities that have been here a long time, and they’re glad you’re here,” he said.

Over the years, Li’l Abner’s has served both everyday diners and Hollywood legends alike. Stars such as John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Marlon Brando have walked through its doors, drawn by nearby filming locations and the steakhouse’s authentic cowboy vibe.

Hearty, Mesquite-Grilled Fare

The food itself is a big part of the draw. Thick-cut steaks, aged for tenderness, are seared over the outdoor mesquite grill, locking in bold flavor. Ribeyes, T-bones, porterhouses, and filets arrive juicy and charred, delivering rich, smoky flavor in every bite. Beef and pork ribs fall off the bone. Every dish reflects the classic Western-style approach to grilling.

The beans are hearty and smoky, served with soft, fresh bread meant to be dipped into both the beans and the salsa.

“The beans are cowboy beans; they’re supposed to be like the cowboys had on the trail,” Gibbon said. “This is the recipe they used on the trail ride, and the salsa was on the trail ride too.”

All-natural burgers are slightly charred outside while remaining juicy inside, and Red Bird chicken offers a lighter, tender option without sacrificing flavor.

“The filet is my favorite thing, and the ribs are really good,” he said.

Generations of Loyal Customers

Many customers have been coming for generations, forming a loyal local following. Visitors return yearly, especially during the Tucson gem show season.

“The out-of-towners are people that come back year after year… they’ll get in the airport and come straight here,” Bell said.

Gibbon added, “The people from the gem show come here for the beef ribs because you can’t find beef ribs like this anywhere. They’re so tender.”

Bell’s own story reflects the changing landscape of the area. Growing up on Ina and Thornydale, he would ride his sister’s bike against the wind to get to work at Li’l Abner’s.

“I was 16 and I had a buddy who worked here,” he recalled. “If you were coming here, it was because there was nothing out here.”

Today, the restaurant sits amid a more developed part of Marana, but that sense of history and grit remains.

Classic Menu and Full Bar

The menu is a love letter to classic steakhouse fare. Rib-eye, T-bone, porterhouse, and the cowboy beans are staples, while natural Red Bird chicken offers a lighter option.

Desserts keep the comfort-food tradition going, with pecan pie and cherry cobbler rounding out the meal.

“Pecan and cherry cobbler. And the hot fudge is homemade,” Gibbon said. “So we make it now with scratch cocoa powder. It’s so good.”

Li’l Abner’s also features a full bar, where guests can pair their meals with cold beer, whiskey, or classic cocktails. Behind the bar, longtime bartender Shawn pours drinks for regulars and first-time visitors alike, adding another layer to the restaurant’s relaxed, old-school atmosphere.

A Taste of Tradition

After nearly eight decades, Li’l Abner’s continues to draw both locals and visitors looking for a hearty meal and a taste of Marana tradition. From mesquite-grilled steaks and fall-off-the-bone ribs to cowboy beans meant for dipping and strong pours from the bar, the steakhouse remains a place where good food, good drinks, and a sense of history keep people coming back year after year.
