Charro Steak: Downtown Tucson’s Sonoran-Inspired Steakhouse (VIDEO)

Downtown Tucson’s Charro Steak is not your basic steakhouse.

The restaurant draws inspiration from Sonoran style Mexican cuisine, a style they know well as the family behind Charro Steak, the Flores family is the same team that owns and operates the iconic El Charro.

With menu items like El Camote, which features sweet potatoes topped with piloncillo, and Charred Romaine Wedge con Chicharron, a Sonoran twist on the classic wedge, it’s easy to get a sense of the restaurants non-steak offerings with regards to Sonora meet Southern Arizona.

But when it comes to steak, few restaurants in town come close to the quality of beef, and experience in preparation and cooking. Chef Gary Hickey knows his way around a side of beef. In fact, all steaks are cut in house. When it comes to cooking, Charro Steak uses a unique, one-of-a-kind gas-wood hybrid grill, which allows for precise cooking over real wood flame (and smoke).

Even beverages get preferential treatment. And not just the adult beverages. For example, for Charro Steak’s peach tea, peaches are grilled in-house and served with the drink. Cocktails include items like chocolate molé bitters and ginger peppercorn syrup, amongst a handful of others.

Just be sure to save room for dessert. With items such as PB & C Tres Leches, a chocolate tres leches cake with peanut butter frosting and spiced peanuts, it’s be a shame to leave with only a slice of the savory to remember.

Charro Steak is located at 188 E. Broadway and open Sunday through Thursday from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. More information is available at charrosteak.com.
