Cooking Demo With Tucson Iron Chef Danny Perez At Rillito Park Farmers Market

Aug 6, 20151 min read

For a small city, Tucson has an exceptional number of farmers markets for residents to choose from. Between the CSA, Heirloom Farmers Markets, Market on the Move and Food in Root, it is not difficult to find fresh, local produce nearly every day of the week. It is one of those luxuries that we often take for granted living in Tucson, like the 24/7 availability of excellent Mexican food, or those eight months of perfect weather.

Show your appreciation for our local growers and the organizations that bring them to our neighborhoods with National Farmers Market Week, August 2-9.

Heirloom Farmers Markets is celebrating with a Chef at the Market demo featuring Executive Chef Danny Perez from JW Marriott Starr Pass. Beginning at 9am, join the recently crowned Iron Chef Tucson for a cooking demonstration at the Rillito Park Farmers Market Pavilion on Sunday, August 9. True to his personal cooking style, Perez will be featuring seasonal market ingredients from the local farmers on hand that day.

“Farmers markets play a vital role in forming healthy, local food systems,” says Jen Cheek, Executive Director of the Farmers Market Coalition. “By providing the opportunity for farmers to connect directly with consumers, markets serve as education centers. Vendors are teaching customers about agriculture, sharing recipes, and exposing them to new foods. Markets are making people and communities stronger and healthier.”

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
