The Botanical Gardens will be hosting their 4th annual Feast With The Dearly Departed this Saturday, October 24. Celebrate Dia de Los Muertos and Tucson’s rich Mexican heritage amongst lush gardens and flowers.

“We have such an amazing Mexican American Heritage and community in Tucson,” Melissa D’Auria of the Botanical Gardens said. “We felt not only that the Gardens needed to reflect that, but we needed an event to celebrate it as well.”

There will be a variety of fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, including sugar skull making, face painting, mariachi music and traditional Sonoran fare.

Guests are encouraged to get creative with feathers, sequins, glitter glue, and paint to create their best depiction of the iconic sugar skull.

Café Botanica will be selling gourmet Palletas,a traditional fruit popsicle and decorative pastries known as pan dulce. There is even pan de muerto, a sweet Mexican bread traditionally eaten for Day of the Dead celebrations. Dog Daze will be serving Sonoran hot dogs and La Mesa will be providing tamales, tortillas, chips and salsa.

The gardens will be scattered with vibrant decorations, hand crafted skeletons created by local artists and schools, and even an ofrenda, a traditional memorial shrine. Bring a gift or a note to leave at the ofrenda to honor the community’s ancestors.

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
