Unless you frequent Tucson’s Southeast neighborhoods by Davis Monthan Air Force Base, you may not be aware of Mama Louisa’s, an old-school Italian eatery. The family-owned restaurant has been serving up their traditional recipes in Tucson since 1956, meaning you have nearly 60 years of pasta to catch up on.

“It all starts at about 7am daily with fresh, homemade pastas…then, with care and attention, family members follow traditional Italian recipes, many brought to this country by our grandmother,” states the Mama Louisa’s website. “It takes time to prepare food this way, but it’s the only way we know how, it’s the only way we will do it.”

On December 1 at 6pm, chef Michael Elefante, formerly of the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain,  is offering a surprisingly upscale four-course introduction to the restaurant. Elefante’s grandfather, Joseph Elefante Sr., was the original executive chef and owner of Mama Louisa’s.

Each course, from Butternut Squash Risotto with Seared Scallops to Frangelico Creme Brûlée, will be paired with an appropriate wine. All for only $45 per person.

  • Wine Pairing – Angeline Pinot Noir

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
