Many would agree that when it’s cold outside, it’s much more enjoyable to have a warm cup of coffee in hand, no matter the time of day.
Until recently, Mount Lemmon was lacking in the coffee arena. That is until Debbie Weatherly solved that problem and opened up a coffee shop, Mt. Lemmon Coffee Bean, in the quaint town that we all know and love at the top, Summerhaven.
Mount Lemmon has always been Tucson’s popular destination spot that allows people to venture up and escape the desert heat by car, foot, or bike. A favorite spot for most adventure seekers. The journey up the mountain is full of twists and turns as the beautiful scenery slowly changes from the desert covered in saguaros to pine trees, cottonwoods, and aspen trees.
Whether you’re rock climbing, mountain biking, road biking, hiking, fishing, camping, or simply going to enjoy the drive for the day, adventures up the mountain all have one common end goal: crisp mountain air, the scent of pine needles, fall leaves, gorgeous views, and a sense of calmness that the city life definitely doesn’t bring.
Summerhaven, the small town at the top of the mountain, which sits at 7,600 to 8,200 feet, has seen a devastating amount of fires which amazingly the town has worked to rebuild. But since the Aspen fire in 2003, it has been missing one thing that every small mountain town needs: coffee.
“I couldn’t find a cup of coffee in the early morning hours when I was working up here on the mountain, nothing opened until 11, so I decided I would open my own shop”, said Weatherly with a friendly smile while serving me a warm vanilla latte.
Weatherly saw a need and so as any smart businesswoman does, she opened a coffee shop of her own on August 19, 2022.
As a Mount Lemmon local, she’s enjoying meeting people from all over the world as they stop by for coffee. Weatherly owns and runs the Mt. Lemmon Coffee Bean, so it’ll be her friendly face serving you your choice of a large variety of options on the menu.
With the help of others who live on Mount Lemmon, she’s offering locally made pastries to snack on, alongside your coffee or hot cocoa. The menu is always fresh and changing up the rotation of baked goods but it’s likely you’ll find slices of banana bread and muffins in the mix.
With a rainbow sticker on the window that says “we serve everyone,” it is clear that all are welcome at the Mt. Lemmon Coffee Bean. With a walk-up window — a grab-and-go model — it’s perfect for drinking your coffee while walking the town.
Neighboring the newly built Mt. Lemmon hotel, the coffee shop is the perfect spot to warm your belly and your hands while visiting the quaint little mountain town we all adore.
The coffee shop is open 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Wednesday – Sunday.
