Tucson Picnic Guide: Where to Find Bread, Cheese, & Gourmet Bites

Apr 6, 20263 min read

Before Tucson tips into triple-digit territory, now is the time to lean into the kind of Tucson picnic that feels effortless and a little romantic. The mornings still carry a breeze, the evenings stretch out with golden light, and the desert offers just enough comfort to linger a little longer.

Grab a date, a picnic blanket, and a sturdy basket, then make a few strategic stops around town to build a spread that looks thoughtful without requiring any real prep. Think fresh-baked bread, artisanal cheeses, seasonal fruit, and a bottle of something cold. With the right mix, you can turn a patch of grass or a scenic overlook into a full-on dining experience. These Tucson spots make it easy to assemble a picnic that feels curated, abundant, and stress-free.

Barrio Bread

Barrio Bread features bread that locals love, but even celebrities swing by from the airport when they’re in town. The hardest part is not getting crumbs all over your car and not finishing the bread before you even get to the picnic.

Fortunato’s Italian Deli

9100 E. Tanque Verde Rd.

For a hole-in-the-wall vibe conveniently located near Mount Lemmon, swing by Fortunato’s Italian Deli just east of Catalina Highway.

The classic and Italian deli sandwiches pack well to bring up the mountain.

Catering makes it an easy option for a large family picnic. Also, keep an eye out for the fresh cannoli and other baked goods.

For more information, visit fortunatosdeli.com.

Another Mount Lemmon-area staple, Le Buzz has you covered on the sweet end as well. The fresh baked goodies, baked daily, include cookies, galettes, sticky rolls, scones, pies, and more.

Just make sure to get the eponymous Le Buzz Cookie.

Roma Imports

The deli counter at Roma Imports is filled with refrigerated finger-food delights.

Assorted peppers stuffed with ricotta or goat cheese are a must. The grilled artichokes taste even better than they sound, too.

Order Matt’s Special, a classic Italian sandwich with the addition of prosciutto and fresh mozzarella.

The RumRunner

3131 E. First St.

The RumRunner has much more than rum; visit for spirits, beer, wine, cheese, crackers, and other accoutrements.

You can get some simple English cheddar, rare Pacific Northwest goat cheese, or exotic blue cheese, so it’s easy to get carried away. Meat products such as paté, Spanish chorizo, and jamón are also available.

The staff is exceptionally knowledgeable about their products, so they turn the overwhelming selection into an accessible experience.
