Public Taphouse brings craft beer, wine & cozy vibes to the east side

Mar 5, 20202 min read

With the recent addition of Public Taphouse, Tucson’s east side continues to bolster its emergent assemblage of locally owned bars and restaurants.

The taphouse officially opened its doors on February 7th and has enjoyed a month of increasing business as word of their opening circulates across town.

Public Taphouse is the sister location of local nano-brewery, Public Brewhouse. Much like its older sibling humbly hidden off of Fourth Avenue, the taphouse is nuzzled next to the Pantano Wash away from the busy Tanque Verde and Kolb intersection—slightly south of Tucson Country Club.

“It’s definitely different than our downtown location,” said co-owner Mike Gura. “I recently moved to this side of town and the opportunity was there. I thought it’d be a great spot to have wine available, too, and I’ve been into wine for a while now. It’s a great opportunity to showcase wine on this part of town.”

The quaint taphouse space emanates a communal atmosphere similar to that of the locally-motivated brewery downtown. Comfortable seating accompanied by good friends and a thorough variety of beer and wine encourage nothing but enjoyment and appreciation of the carefully curated space and drink options.

“It’s a small place, octagonal, and has windows on six sides. It’s a relaxing vibe and I took the time to hand-stencil the walls. It has a cool mosaic theme—a little more upscale than the downtown spot, but it’s still relaxing. It’s cozy,” said Gura.

Due to the particularly small-batch production in the brewery, distributing around town can be difficult. Although, opening Public Taphouse gives the staff a chance to access horizons once considered unreachable.

East side beer drinkers now have the same craft beer found at the brewery’s original location, but with some new additions as well. A variety of wine accompanies the taps of beers available at Public Taphouse, along with a fridge filled with select local and national crafts brews.

“We’ve got a curated beer selection in our fridge,” said Gura. “In total, we only have three taps at the moment and this helps with the demand. It’s not a large cooler, but it’s stuff people like to drink.”

The Public name also carries a notable sense of community with it. With such socially rich and dedicated patrons frequenting Public Brewhouse, it only makes sense to expand that communal unity to another neck of the desert.

Public Taphouse, located at 6720 E. Camino Principal, Suite 101, is open from 4 – 10 p.m. from Tuesday – Friday, 2 – 10 p.m. on Saturday, and 2 – 8 p.m. on Sunday.

@Talegacoffee at 177 N. Church Ave. transforms into @_Velvetcowboy after 4 pm, bringing cocktails, tapas, disco lights, and a lively bar atmosphere to the same space. The dual concept comes from the team behind Talega Coffee Co., with coffee and scratch-made breakfast and lunch served during the day, followed by happy hour and bar service at night.

Velvet Cowboy’s grand opening is Oct. 16, with upcoming events including drag brunches, DJs, and live music.🪩

“Opening this place feels a little surreal. To now have a space where we can bring together coffee, food, art, booze, and all the weird things we love feels like a reflection of how far we’ve come.” —Tyler Melo
