Local First Arizona is hosting an Ethiopian culture and cuisine demo and tasting at Cafe Desta on Wednesday, May 13 from 6 to 8pm. (Update: This event has been sold out.)

For $5, get unlimited tastings of Cafe Desta’s authentic Ethiopian dishes. Traditional dishes come in the form of wat, or a thick stew, and are ordered in groups of two or three per person. Popular menu items at Cafe Desta include the spicy beef, vegan red lentils and spicy lamb.

There will also be a demonstration of how to make Injera, a spongy, sour flatbread, which is a staple of Ethiopian cuisine and is used to scoop up food in lieu of utensils.

Local wines are also available to sip while you dine.

Cafe Desta is located at 758 S. Stone Ave. Seats are limited, and attendees must register in advance here.

The Local First Arizona Localist Program provides members “with special offers and invitations to exclusive events around the state from some of Arizona’s favorite local businesses.” This event is open to everyone, but the program is certainly worth checking out if you’re interested in exploring more of the local food scene.
