If you’ve ever thought about keeping chickens, you likely ran into a number of questions from the offset.
What do they eat? Where do they lay their eggs? Where do they roost? How do you keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter? How do you keep them away from predators?
You might be surprised to learn that there are numerous chicken varieties, and they each have specific characteristics: behavior and disposition, color and pattern of feathers, size and color of eggs, egg laying consistency and others.
These are just a few of the topics covered on the Food Conspiracy Co-op’s Chicken Coop Tour each year. When it began eight years ago, potential chicken keepers could visit existing household systems to see coop possibilities. The self-guided tour offered an inside look at different styles and setups, breeds, and systems that differ depending on their household purpose.

This year’s tour includes household setups, urban farms and larger-scale farm systems. Guests will have the opportunity to visit ReZoNation Farm in Avra Valley, a farm that supplies the Co-op with fresh eggs, Dreamflower Garden in Midtown, a Southside urban farm supported by the Community Food Bank and even a coop currently managed by a 12 year-old.
At Dreamflower Garden, pay a visit to Holistic Hen, a small business growing and packaging herb nesting mixes and other products to keep your hens in good health.

This year the Co-op is also on the coop tour. See the Co-op’s emerging chicken system, learn about the farmer loan program, hear tips about where to get free chicken food, enjoy local egg samples, and receive Co-op coupons for the store for chicken and eggs discounts.
Discounts for tour goers are also available on chicks at Ace Hardware on 22nd/Kolb and on laying pellets at two Arizona Country Store locations.
The Chicken Coop Tour is on Saturday, December 5th from 10am to 3pm.
Tickets are $5 a person online at www.foodconspiracy.coop, at the Co-op store location, 412 North 4th Avenue, and at Ace Hardware 22nd/Kolb and Arizona Country Store locations, 2701 S. 6th Avenue and 4743 North Highway Drive. Children under 5 are free.
