Classic cuisine from Greece with a spin on burgers.

The culinary vibes from Greece are alive and well at Opa’s Best.

The family owned and operated spot is one of the newest restaurants to join the evergrowing food scene with its Greek-American dishes.

Chef and owner Qais Esar owns and operates the restaurant with his brother and chef Nawid Esar, and both have their share of knowledge in the kitchen. For instance, they grew up with available meats their uncle provided, who worked at least 40 years as a butcher.

From firing up the stove in Greek restaurants in Turkey — which is where the family ran a restaurant — to cooking at the Opa Greek Cuisine & Fun on Campbell Avenue before it closed, the duo has a lot to offer on the menu.

Much of what you’ll find on the menu offers the standard fare such as hummus, dolmades, flaming saganaki, pita sandwiches, braised lamb shank, souvlaki, moussaka, pastitsio, and more.

Opa’s Best Menu Highlights

  • Meatball Rice Avgolemono – rice and chicken soup with lemon, egg, beef meatballs
  • Horiatiki Salad – tomatoes, cucumbers, Greek olives, red onions, green peppers, feta cheese, olives
  • Opa’s Combo Platter – spanakopita, falafel, dolmades, hummus, Greek salad, pita
  • Spicy Chicken Souvlaki Kabob – marinated chicken breast in pepper, thyme, oregano, garlic, olive oil
  • Yemista – stuffed tomato and bell pepper, rice, Greek herbs, potatoes
  • Roasted Lamb – fresh pepper, rosemary, olive oil, served with Greek lemon potatoes, green beans

Study the menu a little more and you’ll find items that somewhat sets them apart from the likes of other Greek restaurants in town.

One of the additions is their selective, but not too crowded, Greek-American burger menu. Right now there’s at least six burgers available, including a couple American-style burgers and a few Greek variations with the likes of sun-dried tomatoes and feta. Although, they’re not meant to overshadow the rest of the traditional cuisine — sharing the extensive menu with what make’s Opa’s Best worthwhile.

After piling mouthfuls of Opa’s Best’s food into your mouth, you’re likely to get thirsty, and surprisingly, Greek food pairs really well with beer.

The beer selection includes a few European beers rare in Tucson; Svyturys Ekstra Lager from Lithuania and Primator Dark Lager from the Czech Republic are on tap, while Mythos Lager from Greece and Efes Pilsener are available by the bottle. A selection of 14 wines are also offered, most of which are Greek.

Opa’s Best is located at 4590 E. Broadway Blvd. Operating hours are 11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Sunday – Thursday, 11 a.m. – 10 p.m. Friday – Saturday. For more information on the menu, location, and more, call (520) 838-0687 or visit opasbest.com.
