Wizarding Out West: Magic, Butterbeer & all things Harry Potter in Tucson

Snap a twig from a tree and call it a wand!

Wizarding Out West is returning to Trail Dust Town, blending the Wild West with the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

This event is for wizards, witches, and muggles of all ages — happening on Sunday, March 9 from 1 – 5 p.m. at 6541 E. Tanque Verde Rd. There’s going to be a magical train ride, a “creatures” petting zoo, live performances, and even the Sorting Hat from Hogwarts.

Perhaps what’s the most exciting are the food and beverage options. This year, they’ll be serving butterbeer (non-alcoholic), turkey legs, and chocolate frogs made locally at Trail Dust Town’s Chocolate Depot. Then, for the wizards and witches 21 years and older, the Hog’s Head Saloon will be serving specialty cocktails.

Tickets for Wizarding Out West are $18 per person (plus tax). On the day of, and if there are any tickets left, they’ll be $25 at the door.

Themed Activities: Attend an interactive potion demonstration, visit the Care of Magical Creatures with TRAK, or play a rousing round of quidditch
Photo Ops: Capture magical moments in a real London phone booth, become a part of the portrait gallery in the Great Hall, or examine the fascinating plants at the Herbology corner
Shopping: Explore the Wizard Alley of Vendors featuring handcrafted wands, enchanted trinkets, tinctures and potions, and wizard-inspired apparel and toys
Special Performances: They’ll have a spellbinding magic show, find out which house you belong to with the help of Professor Sprout’s Sorting Hat, and learn how to defend yourself against the Dark Arts.
Amusement Rides: Take a ride on the Wizarding Express Train or experience the soaring heights of the Owlery Ferris Wheel.

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
