In a city rich with Sonoran hot dogs, choosing a favorite dog can be intimidating. With a variety of components involved, Ruiz Hot Dogs los Chipilones stands out with its butter-toasted buns and immaculate balance of toppings. Now, nearly 15 years since it opened, the humble stand remains a must-stop for Sonoran hot dog lovers in Tucson.
The Maciel brothers launched Ruiz Hot Dogs los Chipilones in 2010. That same year, the stand won a citywide contest for Tucson’s best Sonoran hot dog. Locals quickly embraced the cart, drawn by friendly service and bold flavors.
In 2018, the family added Taqueria los Chipilones next door. The owners remain hands-on daily, ensuring every hot dog meets their standard.
Sonoran hot dogs originated in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico, but Tucson helped them gain attention on a national scale. The classic features a bacon-wrapped frank in a soft, slightly-sweet bun with pinto beans, tomatoes, onions, mustard, and mayonnaise. Each dog comes with a grilled yellow pepper on the side.
Though it operates from a dirt lot, Ruiz Hot Dogs draws steady crowds throughout the day. The cart sits across from Santa Cruz Catholic Church and offers covered seating. Coolers hold salsas and glass-bottled Mexican sodas, and bottled aguas frescas.
Ruiz Hot Dogs is located at 1140 S. 6th Ave. and open 11 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.
