“Empty Bowls” Fundraiser at the Chinese Cultural Center with Eats, Music, & a Bowl to take Home

Interfaith Community Services is teaming up with the Tucson Chinese Cultural Center for the Empty Bowls fundraising event from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 2.

The day is stuffed with samples of soups, breads, and desserts from local restaurants, plus live music and beautifully handcrafted ceramic bowls to purchase.

The event is not only a great way to stuff your face and purchase new bowls, but it’s also to support the Interfaith Community Services. Some of its programs help seniors and those with disabilities stay safe and independent in their homes and also assists families dealing with financial issues.

There will also be a wide selection of raffle and silent auction prizes throughout the cultural center.

Tickets are $25 per person.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
