âThere were many reasons that contributed to this,â said Raphael De La Cuesta, owner of Fatboy Sandos. âNavigating a restaurant these days is so hard on its own â along with so many other factors.â
On Monday, February 10, the Fatboy Sandos crew shared the news that the restaurant has permanently closed.

Fatboy Sandos began as a food truck in 2022, often parking in front of a former office supplies business at the corner of Broadway Boulevard and Euclid Avenue. In just three years, the business blossomed â expanding beyond the food truck and into more than one brick-and-mortar location.
To clarify, we confirmed that the following announcement means that both locations have closed: the Park Place Mallâs food court location (5870 E. Broadway Blvd.) and the out-of-town location in Mesa (1920 W. Broadway Rd #103).
âItâs with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to close Fatboy Sandos. There were many reasons that forced us to come to this very tough decision. We are so grateful for all of the support and love we have received throughout this amazing experience. To our staff. We love and appreciate you and your hard work that made us what we are â something so amazing that perfectly added to the diverse and unmatchable Arizona food scene.â
All in all, the Fatboy Sandos team learned a lot in such a short amount of time, and theyâre already looking forward to the ânext chapter.â
âWe are still super excited for whatâs next for us,â De La Cuesta added. âWe definitely arenât done.â

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasnât his first love. Mattâs first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary â something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the storyâs birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing âfluffierâ content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If youâre in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case youâre curious â yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
