Greek Festival Returns to Tucson

Tucson Greek Festival fans will be pleased to know that the 38-year-old celebration returns in force after a year hiatus. The annual festival, which will take place September 25 – 28 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church will include Greek food, music, dancing, and other festivities.

Over the coming weeks, the kitchen at St Demetrios, under the direction of Jim Gekas (former owner of the landmark Tucson restaurant Palomino), will be filled with the delectable aromas of dishes like Souvlaki, Spanakopita, Baklava, and more as the St Demetrios food committee prepares to feed the hundreds of anticipated guests.

The four day festival also features live music, the award-winning Panathenian Dancers and a Greek Market that features locally made spice blends and rubs, homemade hummus, candies, jewelry, collectibles and more.

The event was cancelled last year due to a fire that destroyed part of the sanctuary  in May of 2013. Although repair has not yet been completed, the congregation has decided to move forward with the festival, which will help raise funds to continue the restoration.

General admission is $3 per person per day, with free admission for children under 12 and active duty military with ID. Seniors over 60 – free admission on Saturday from 4-6pm. A four day pass is available for just $5.00.

For more information on parking, shuttles and daily schedules, please visit their website at www.tucsongreekfest.com or follow them on Facebook.

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
