Once a year, the HungerWalk hits the ground running, bringing together people in Tucson and Green Valley to shine a light on the issue of hunger in Southern Arizona.
More than a thousand people are expected to walk on Saturday, September 14, to raise awareness and join the fight against hunger!
Arizona ranks in the top 10 states for the rate of seniors dealing with food insecurity. One in five children face hunger in Arizona and one in eight adults do as well. Locally, the Community Food Bank continues to see a rising demand for emergency food, up 22% over last year.
When & Where
Walkers will gather in Tucson at Sam Lena Park in the Kino Sports Complex on Saturday, September 14. Games, activities, and light refreshments will be offered after gates open at 7 a.m. with the walk beginning at 8 a.m. This year’s route in Tucson treks across Country Club Road where walkers will enter and tour the Community Food Bank warehouse and garden.
In Green Valley, walkers will make their way around Historic Canoa Ranch. Line dancing, other activities, and music will greet walkers with registration beginning at 7 a.m. The walk kicks off at 8 a.m.
“It’s energizing to see so many people come together to fight hunger,” said Malea Chavez, CEO of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. “This is a challenge that will take all of us working together, and we’re encouraged to see our community gather.”
This is the 15th annual HungerWalk, and proceeds will support the general operating costs of the Community Food Bank, which supplied 450,000 emergency food boxes in Southern Arizona last year.
Both walks are family-friendly and strollers are welcome. Individuals and teams can register online.
Adult registration is $25, Children ages six to 11 years old are $10 and anyone younger is free. People can also join as virtual walkers! You’re able to choose your own time and place to make the HungerWalk happen.
