The Loft Cinema — our beloved, local art house theatre in midtown — likes to explore outside its location at 3233 E. Speedway Blvd. now and again, bringing the big screen to other areas of Southern Arizona.
It’s called Solar Cinema.
The team takes a giant inflatable screen (one that’s either 12 feet or 20 feet in size) and their state-of-the-art mobile projection system to places like the University of Arizona and Himmel Park. This month: the San Xavier Co-op Farm!
This Month’s Screening
At 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, they’re setting up at the San Xavier Co-op Farm at 8100 Oidak Wog. The feature is the late ’90s film “Smoke Signals,” admission is free, and they suggest you bring your own seating. The movie will be shown outside and the weather oughta be as good as it gets here in Tucson.
Come hungry, too!
The crew will be offering their classic movie snacks like nachos, hot dogs, and popcorn, but also some local favorites including handmade popovers/fry bread that’s served either plain or topped with red chile. Also, Ciolom (cholla buds) Pico De Gallo is on the menu.
Plus, they’ll be selling coffee, hot chocolate, and bottled water.
Don’t forget to bring your friends and something to lounge on! “Smoke Signals” runs for about 90 minutes — a film that was entirely written, directed, and acted by Native Americans.

More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating.
