The Tucson Michelada Challenge, sponsored by Modelo Especial, is back for its third year at the Tucson Convention Center Exhibition Hall. With over 40 bartenders competing, you’ll want to catch a ride.

For those not from ’round these parts, the Michelada is a Bloody Mary’s prima. Instead of vodka, there’s beer. Instead of lemon, there’s lime. While there’s no celery salt, potent Tajín or chamoy is often used to rim the glass. It’s one of the few exceptions where ice and beer are happy partners. It’s a unique refreshment that’s greater than the sum of its parts, much like the beloved Sonoran dog.

As a bonus, chips and salsa for snacking will be provided by Mouth of the South.

Competing bartenders will be supplied with ice and their choice of Corona, Corona Light, Modelo Especial, or Negra Modelo. Everything else will be supplied by the bartenders’ respective restaurants, so prepare to see some adventurous entries.

Live entertainment will be provided by:

  • Mariachi Sol Azteca
  • Powermix Pro DJs
  • The Jons
  • Rockstar Wrestling Alliance

General admission is $22 in advance, $27 at the door if not sold out. VIP admission is $52 in advance, $72 at the door if not sold out. To purchase tickets, call 520-791-4101 ext. 1 or visit ticketmaster.com. For more information visit tucsonmichelada.com.

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
