For 22 years, Kingfisher Bar & Grill has brought a New Orleans-style Mardi Gras feast to Tucson. This year the Fat Tuesday festivities take place Tuesday, February 9 from 5 to 11pm.
Fat Tuesday is the last day of Mardi Gras celebrations before the beginning of Lent, a season of preparation and penance for Christians.
The à la carte menu options include classic Louisiana dishes, like seafood gumbo, deep-fried cornmeal crusted catfish, and beignets. Hurricanes, Sazeracs and a selection of Louisiana brews, such as Dixie Lager and Abita Turbodog, will also be offered. The regular Kingfisher dinner menu will also be available.
In the spirit of the holiday, guests will be offered Mardi Gras beads and a chance to win a Fat Tuesday t-shirt if they “find the baby” in the King Cake. Much like Mardi Gras itself, the King Cake has surpassed its religious roots and become a widely-celebrated, non-denominational tradition. The tiny plastic baby hidden within the cake originated as a symbol of the Epiphany, a Christian holiday celebrating when the three wisemen first saw Jesus as a newborn.
The Old Pueblo Jazz Band will kick off the celebration at Kingfisher at 5:30pm followed by Dr Mojo and the Zydeco Cannibals from 8:30 to closing.
