One year ago, Gabriela Alcaraz opened his Comida del Barrio food truck after years of dreaming and preparation. Before that, he ran a small auto detailing shop.
“I wanted to do this for some time,” he said. “But South Tucson didn’t allow food trucks for 18 years. There were restaurants, but no trucks, so we are the first ones.”
Serving Food and Family Vibes
Although business started slowly, Alcaraz hopes to create a family-friendly space that welcomes everyone. His truck sits in a residential neighborhood, which can be hard to find without word-of-mouth.
Still, regulars keep returning. Alcaraz built the truck not only to sell food, but also to serve his community.
From Hot Dogs to Homemade Plates
Alcaraz began in the food scene by selling Sonoran hot dogs with a friend at local events. That early exposure sparked a bigger goal.
“I decided to have my own food truck, one where I could always serve people free fideo,” he said.
Now, he hopes to turn his entire lot into a food hub. He envisions a shared space with raspados, wings, Mexican seafood, and more. The area includes an outdoor kitchen, handmade tortillas, and plenty of seating.
A Menu That Feels Like Home
Comida del Barrio offers classic Mexican dishes like menudo and posole, along with tacos, quesadillas, and combo plates. The truck’s name reflects its purpose: to serve food from and for the neighborhood.
One customer favorite is the Tacos Dorados. These crispy tacos come with rice, beans, salsa, sour cream, and pico de gallo. The beef taco delivers a juicy, rich flavor, while the shredded chicken offers a lighter option.
Where to Find Comida del Barrio
