5 Vegan Dishes to Try This Week, Volume 1

Jan 17, 20192 min read

Whether or not you eat meat, you still need to eat your vegetables.

Thankfully, Tucson’s vegetable game is on point. There are too many veggie dishes to feature all at once, so we’ll introduce a few at a time.

Here are five vegan dishes to try this week.

Cauliflower at BOCA Tacos y Tequila

533 N. Fourth Ave.

One of the newest items on BOCA’s menu, the Cauliflower Taco features grilled cauliflower tossed in curry cilantro and orange oil. With the daily changing salsas, you can experience the taco differently every visit.

Veggie White Ramen at OBON Sushi Bar Ramen

350 E. Congress St.

While we eagerly wait for OBON’s new menu to launch, they’re teasing us with one new item: the Veggie White Ramen. While the soy milk provides a creamy flavor, you’ll definitely feel lighter after eating it than you would from eating a bowl of tonkotsu.

Vegan Tamales de Jamaica at Tanias “33” Mexican Food

614 N. Grande Ave.

These vegan tamales utilize hibiscus leaves for a fibrous meat texture, similar to how jackfruit is utilized.

Urban Fresh’s entire menu is vegan and you can’t go wrong regardless of what you choose. Specials change daily, so it’s easy to be a regular too.

For a menu standard, try the Green Chile Burger with a half-pound patty made of tofu, mushrooms, flax, and Panko baked and topped with Merchant’s Garden lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado, and roasted green chile on a sesame seed bun.

Three Sisters Burrito at Welcome Diner

902 E. Broadway Blvd.

Welcome Diner’s Three Sisters Burrito features a vegan blend of tempura squash, corn, Tepary beans, smoked pecan cheese, ranchero, and pico de gallo.

The combination of squash and beans happens to grow well next to each other — they also provide all eight essential amino acids, making it something you could get away with eating exclusively for a while.

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
