Gluten-FREEstyle at Time Market With Lacey & Suede

Gluten-FREEstyle at Time Market With Lacey & Suede

Oct 14, 20152 min read

Time Market is a boutique grocery store and artisan pizza (and sandwich) parlor inviting coffee drinkers and craft-beer fans alike.

Rustic-modern architecture, hardwood floors, high ceilings and an abundance of natural light make for a cozy space. The smells alone trigger an appetite for a breakfast or lunch feast. However, this was our most challenging FREEstyle yet. The quest for a gluten and dairy-free meal required our best creative efforts.

The shared meal:

Beet Pistachio Salad

How it’s served: Roasted and marinated organic beets, organic spring mix, toasted pistachios, Coach Farm goat cheese (Pine Plains, NY), sherry vinaigrette.

Gluten FREEstyle version: A simple omission of goat cheese makes this salad option gluten and dairy-free. The mild, roasted flavor of pistachio holds its own against the vinaigrette’s tartness.

Hummus Plate

How it’s served: Housemade flatbread, dolmades, hummus, tabbouleh, tomatoes, cucumber.

Gluten FREEstyle version: Hold the flatbread, hold the tabbouleh. Although the photo shows differently, substitute extra dolmades (grape leaves wrapped around seasoned rice in lemon and oil) for the offered tabbouleh mix (made from bulgur, a wheat grain).

From the kitchen: Chopped, seasoned chicken breast

From the deli case: Egg Salad (organic eggs, radish, celery, capers, dill, green onion, mustard, lemon, olive oil)

From the market: Terra, original vegetable chips

Lacey & Suede say: Strictly considering meal choices, Time Market misses the mark for us. The market’s relatively expansive snack (allergen-friendly) and hard-cider selection is counter-intuitive to the lack of gluten and dairy-free menu options. Reactions to cross-contamination set aside, a simple addition of gluten-free bread would immediately transform our dining experience. It’s a place we love hanging out, but there’s not a lot for us to eat.

@Jundynasty has served Sichuan dishes on Grant Road for 13 years.🌶️

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

@Lovinspoonfulstucson is closing after more than 20 years in Tucson. Its final day of service runs on Saturday, Oct. 24.

Customers can stop in between now and Saturday for one last meal. The team plans to sell down its inventory, though it hopes to have favorite dishes available. Regular hours remain 9am-3pm through the final day.

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”
