‘Original ChopShop’ to open its first Tucson location

Oct 26, 20222 min read

Just like the epic ’90s hairdo — the bowl cut — eating your food out of a bowl is a trend that’s been around for years. Sure, there’s the classic bowl of cereal but many other and better concoctions are served in bowls these days.

Here in Tucson, we’ve got another option coming to 2749 N. Campbell Ave. The restaurant chain, Original ChopShop, is scheduled to open by late summer of 2023.

The restaurant isn’t opening for several months but mainly because the structure found at the address is set to be demolished and rebuilt to look like the brand’s 17 other locations spread out around Phoenix, Dallas, and Houston.

What’s Cookin’?

The menu includes all sorts of dishes ranging from salads, superfruit bowls, parfaits, sandwiches like the Moroccan Turkey and Grilled Steak, and a mighty collection of protein bowls.

The protein bowls already come with roasted broccoli, cauliflower, onion, carrot, and mushroom but you’ve got the option to include proteins such as Thai Coconut Chicken, Green Curry Tofu, Spicy Korean Steak, Terriyaki Chicken, Sweet Soy Sesame Steak, and Red Chili Lime Shrimp.

The location

The project got its start with the help of Larsen Baker and its affiliate Campbell Avenue Developers, LLC. The group recently acquired the retail building, which currently houses L’amour Nails, for $950,000.

The first owners of Original ChopShop opened the flagship location in Old Town Scottsdale in 2013. With the success of their first location, a second spot was opened near ASU in Tempe less than a year later. However, in 2016, the owners sold “controlling interest in the company” to a group of Texas-based investors that wished to expand Original ChopShop outside of Arizona.

Lots happening on Campbell

Keep an eye out for changes to the Original ChopShop spot as the months creep by. Lately, Campbell Avenue has been blossoming with new food and beverage spots — Two Hands Corn Dogs and Ni Hao Tea opened its doors recently and Flower Child and Doughbird are expected to open in the near future as well.

Additionally, spots like Goodness, Raging Sage, Upper Crust Pizza, and Karuna’s Thai Plate continue to treat Tucsonans with new menus and old classics.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

General manager Jacob Yeung credits one idea above all: “We’ve grown since then, but the key has always been consistency.”

Stop in for Flaming Chili Oil, Walnut Shrimp, chow fun, or sautéed green beans finished with Sichuan peppercorns. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.
