Jan 22, 20264 min read

The James Beard Award Foundation announced its 2026 semifinalists on Wednesday, placing Tucson on the national culinary stage again. Claudia Vindiola, owner of La Frida Mexican Grill & Seafood, was named a semifinalist in the Best Chef: Southwest category. The awards are among the highest honors in the U.S. restaurant industry, recognizing leadership and excellence in cooking, hospitality and food culture.

Semifinalists will compete for finalist status when nominees are revealed March 31, and winners are named June 15 in Chicago.

Words from Claudia Vindiola

Vindiola issued the following statement:

In English:

We want to express our most sincere and heartfelt gratitude to those who nominated us and considered us for this recognition. Being taken into account is an immense honor for us, and a confirmation that work done with love, consistency, and respect for our cuisine truly matters.

This recognition is not individual. It reflects a collective effort rooted in the heart of our team, the trust of our guests, and the constant support of our community. Every dish that leaves our kitchen carries history, tradition, and deep respect for Mexican culinary culture.

To our nominators, thank you for seeing, valuing, and believing in our vision. Your confidence inspires us to continue elevating our work, honoring our traditions, and sharing them with pride.

Vindiola’s Background

Vindiola’s nomination marks a milestone for her restaurant on East 22nd Street. La Frida blends Mexican tradition with modern technique, aiming to showcase Mexican cuisine beyond tacos and burritos. In a previous Tucson Foodie interview, Vindiola said she grew up learning to cook in her mother’s kitchen and later pursued her passion after two decades as a hairstylist, focusing on scratch cooking and meticulous presentation.

Every dish is prepared from scratch with fresh ingredients, house-made syrups at the bar, and locally grown garnishes, including flowers and sprouts cultivated in Marana. Vindiola described designing the restaurant over a year to ensure every dish, drink and detail matched her vision.

Vindiola also emphasized the importance of community and teamwork, saying La Frida feels like a family and supports local suppliers.

La Frida Mexican Grill & Seafood is located at 7230 E. 22nd St. For more information, visit lafridamexicangrill.com.
