Edible & Medicinal Oaks of Arizona

This event has already taken place

About

Oaks have been, and continue to be, an important source of food and medicine for millennia across the globe. That said, here in the mountains of Arizona (while relatively under appreciated) they are of particular importance due to both their sheer abundance and diversity (where approximately 13 species can be found!). And although ALL oaks (Quercus spp. & relatives) have edible/medicinal virtues some are much more preferred than others...for a variety of reasons.
.
In this workshop you will thoroughly explore a number of Arizona's native species while focusing our attention on all three Quercus subgenera: white, red, and intermediate oaks. Through a combination of interactive lecture and hands-on activities they'll delve into all aspects of the process, including: botany/I.D, ethical harvesting methods, acorn/bark processing, food/medicine preparation methods, historical & modern food/medicinal uses, ethnobotanical significance, while also covering any utilitarian potential. Both hot and cold leaching methods will be taught/utilized during class.
.
This full immersion lecture/hands-on workshop is guaranteed to take your oak awareness and appreciation to a whole new level!
.
Location: Near Tucson, AZ (within 30 miles of downtown)

Registration: TBA in fall of 2024

No refunds will be issued after September 29.

Make sure to bring: Water, lunch, notebook, and a camera.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
