About

Scheduled during the weekend of the Tucson Festival of Books, this hands-on cooking class menu is based upon upon food and recipes referenced in the hugely popular, Outlander, a historical romance time-travel book series, written by Diana Gabaldon. The series was adapted for TV for a 9-season series about British nurse Claire Randall who time travels from the 20th-century to 17th-century Scotland. There she finds love and adventure with the dashing Jamie Fraser, a Highland warrior.

Cooking Class Menu:

  • Cocktail: Outlander – a drink with Scotch blend whiskey, elderflower, bitters, and fresh squeezed lemon (hands-on mixology for students 21+ years)
  • Entree: Steak and Mushroom filled Yorkshire Pudding, (hands-on student cooking)
  • Side: Colcannon – a dish made of mashed potato and cabbage (hands-on student cooking)
  • Dessert: Apple Pandowdy (hands-on student cooking)

Students 21+ years are welcome to bring their own wine, champagne, beer, etc. to enjoy during class.

*Despite the featured image, It’s likely unnecessary but prudent to note that Sam Heughan will not be attending this cooking class. Likewise, the producers, actors, nor anyone associated with Outlander have endorsed or sponsored this class.

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
