Sonora’s Bacanora Route – Bacanora & Sahuaripa

This event has already taken place

About

Dive into the distillation process in the Sierra Madre with Borderlandia and meet the people directly involved in spirit production on this special itinerary to the namesake town of Bacanora.

Departing from Nogales, and based in the capital city of Hermosillo, we will spend two nights – the first and final – taking in the city’s cosmopolitan life. On our second full day, we will head east to uncover the roots of agave culture in northwestern Mexico at its source. The second night will be in Sahuaripa, the land of the Mexican Jaguar, just up the road from Bacanora, where we will stay at an old mill converted into a bed and breakfast.

You’ll get to know the producers, learn about their process at three different vinatas, take part in tastings, enjoy the local gastronomy, and experience the beautiful denomination of the origin region, home of this Sonoran spirit.

Dates: April 12-15, 2026 (3 nights / 4 days)

IOU Sushi III has closed. The all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant on North Oracle Road announced the news on Facebook after about 10 years in Tucson. “This is the hardest post I’ve had to write,” the owners said. The post continued, “we have met some great friends who have become family to us.” Tucson Foodie first visited the restaurant in 2017, when it operated as IOU Sushi IV.

Anne Rysdale built @sheltercocktaillounge in 1961 with concrete walls, lava rock, and Cold War nerves. Today, owners Pam Santangelo and Kevin Breutzmann keep the Tucson bar exactly as regulars remember it. Inside, martinis share space with JFK memorabilia, a vintage atomic chandelier, and a suit of armor named Charlie. “Tucson is changing so much, but this has stayed the same. It’s a time capsule,” Santangelo said.
