El Charro Café is having some fun as we creep closer to the 100th anniversary in 2022. So, as a way of including future generations and all of us “kids” at heart in the celebration, they recently released a coloring comic book version of the celebrated history of the chimichanga.
It’s an illustrative representation of Mexican cuisine and Tucson’s local art scene — doubling as a kid’s menu, too. Beginning on Tuesday, December 14, the four-page coloring comic book, which was created by Tucson’s own Frank Powers of The Comic Bookmobile, will be available at the tables of all El Charro Café locations.

“It’s a cute way to remember a funny accident that became a legend,” said Chef Carlotta Flores of Flores Concepts, who was recently recognized by Forbes as having an impact on society and culture.
The special edition menu and coloring book is titled The Accidental Origin of The Chimichanga. Plus, all kids are encouraged to submit their colored-in comic book for an opportunity to win a $100 gift card. That’s right. Maybe they can be the ones pickin’ up the dinner bill for a change.
All entries need to be turned in at any El Charro location or posted to the El Charro Facebook page by Christmas Eve. As the ultimate holiday gift, the winner will be announced on Christmas Day.

The Flores family has been known to support the local arts community, but this is their first dive into the world of comic books — may not be the last either.
As SiCharro! President Ray Flores said, “Who knows, maybe it’s time to introduce SiCharro! Girl, as for the last 100 years we have been witness to some super-hero women like Tia Monica and our mom, Chef Carlotta Flores,” said Ray Flores, Si Charro! President.

Keep in mind, these comic books are available from Tuesday, December 14 – Friday, December 24. All El Charro restaurants are open on Christmas Eve from noon – 7 p.m. and closed on Christmas Day.
El Charro Café is located at 311 N. Court Ave., 7725 N. Oracle Rd., 6910 E. Sunrise Dr. For more info, visit elcharrocafe.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
