Maru Japanese Noodle Shop’s new curry bowls are the bee’s knees

Maru Japanese Noodle Shop’s new curry bowls are the bee’s knees

We just can’t get enough of Maru Japanese Noodle Shop.

If you like Japanese food and more specifically, noodles, you’ll definitely want to rush right on over. Whether it’s ramen, udon, soba, and now curry bowls (which, mind you, are served with rice, not noodles) you’ll find a variety of options for each. And Maru, which is the sister restaurant for midtown’s Yoshimatsu specializes in healthier preparation.

But don’t let ‘healthier’ equate to ‘bland.’ These are all full-flavored bowls sans the MSG.

The new curry bowl options, which are served with rice and Maru’s house curry sauce include:

  • Maru Curry Deluxe – Combination of charshoo pork, spice pork, ground beef, and egg
  • Beef Curry
  • Pork Katsu – breaded pork cutlet
  • Kara Age Curry – Japanese style fried chicken
  • Veggie Curry – Roasted vegetable (mixed root and other vegetables)
  • Potato Croquette

Now, just in case you haven’t heard of or yet experienced all that is Maru, it’s a heavenly little slice of Japan, nestled into a nondescript strip mall at Speedway and Silverbell’s northeast corner. If you’re at all familiar with Yoshimatsu on Campbell, it’s the same team.

While at this time, we’re all about the curry bowls, below is a comprehensive rundown of the other available options at Maru.

Hot Ramen*

Ramen bowls range in price from $10.95 to $12.95 depending on size. The Pork Katsu, however is $14 and $16 for a small or large, respectively.

  • Tonkotsu – Pork ramen
  • Tantan – Spicy ground pork
  • Miso
  • Shoyu
  • Vegan Veggie Miso
  • Pork Katsu Curry Ramen
  • Chicken Curry Ramen
  • Veggie Creamy

*Seasonally, Maru also offers cold ramen, however right now is not that season.

  • Kake (noodles and broth, $6.80
  • Chicken, $9.50
  • Beef, $9.50
  • Veggie Creamy, $10
  • Tantan (spicy ground pork), $9.50
  • Curry Udon, $8.50
  • Kitsune (Swet Tofu), $8.50
  • Veggie, $9

Rice Bowls (Donburi) at Maru

  • Gyu Don (Beef), $10
  • Charshoo Don, $9
  • Sesame Chicken Don, $9
  • Sesame Tofu Don (Gluten-Free & Vegan), $9

Maru also offers an extensive variety of appetizers, kids options, and toppings. They’ve also recently launched a “matcha ramen” which is Instagram worthy!

Give them a try and let us know what you think.

Tucson’s food scene draws people to the city year-round. Locals and visitors alike also appreciate the chance to eat outdoors from October through April, when daytime highs often settle in the 60s and 70s. Even on “cold” evenings, a patio with a heater or fire pit keeps dinner comfortable.

Whether you want a quiet brunch, a lively happy hour, or a long dinner under the stars, this list offers a place to start. Check each restaurant’s hours before you go, since patio seating may vary by weather and season. More details on Tucsonfoodie.com.🌞
