How sweet it is to live in Tucson and to know that Monsoon Chocolate is around dishing out confections.
The local chocolate shop has won honors in the past and now they’re in the running to win again at this year’s Good Food Awards. The awards recognize American food and beverage producers who demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, social responsibility, and culinary excellence.

“We’re equally honored and humbled to be the only company representing Arizona this year,” the chocolate factory shared online.
The Good Food-nominated sweets
Monsoon Chocolate is nominated in three different categories: Snacks, Chocolate, and Confections.
Snacks Category
In the Snacks category, their Coconut Macaroons Covered in Dark Chocolate got the nod. These bite-sized delights are gluten-free, made with organic coconut, draped in a dark chocolate blend, and then sprinkled with toasted coconut.

Chocolate Category
The Whiskey Del Bac Barrel Aged Dark Chocolate Bar is nominated in the Chocolate category. This mighty bar uses a blend of cacao beans and is then aged in barrels used to make Whiskey Del Bac’s Dorado.

Confections Category
The final nomination is the Sonoran Sea Salt Dark Chocolate Bon Bon, which is included in the Confections category at the 2023 Good Food Awards. This one, found in the Catalina Collection Bon Bon Box, is enrobed in dark chocolate ganache and then sprinkled with sea salt that’s been sourced from the Sea of Cortez. Local purveyors, Desert Provisions, helped out with this masterpiece.

More about the Good Food Awards
The Good Food Foundation organizes the three-day Good Food Awards Weekend for the public so folks can meet, celebrate, taste, and buy from the nearly 200 Winners. Usually, more than 2,000 entries from all 50 states are submitted each year and just a few come out on top.
The big event is happening on Friday, April 21 in Portland, Oregon. For more information, visit goodfoodfdn.org.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
