Sneak Peek: Decibel Coffee Works to Open on Broadway

Jan 30, 20252 min read

Decibel Coffee Works has been serving coffee to folks wandering around the MSA Annex since late 2019. Decibel isn’t just about caffeine either — it’s about music, community, and creativity. The shop is inspired by sound, making it a go-to spot for music lovers.

There’s always something great coming out of the speakers at Decibel, and now those tunes and brews are heading to the recently renovated Sol Block building on Broadway.

At 7 a.m. on Friday, January 31, Decibel Coffee Works will open its new location at 2631 E. Broadway Blvd. They’re now neighbors with the recently opened Rocco’s Little Chicago and The Broadway, as well as the soon-to-open Quisty’s Sandwiches.

“Expect to see new things!”

“At our new location, we want to continue and expand on the things we’ve been doing at our Annex location for years,” said Michael “Gonzo” Gonzales, General Manager at Decibel. “With our new location, we have the opportunity to expand our menu a lot more.”

So, plan to find everything you love about the MSA Annex location with some new additions sprinkled in here and there.

“Because of the extra space, we are able to offer some new coffee experiences like single-origin espresso,” Gonzo added. We are also excited to expand our pastry and ice cream offerings as we get more and more comfortable in our new kitchen.”

During Decibel’s soft opening period, hours will be 7 a.m.–2 p.m. daily. At the beginning of March, the team is hosting an official grand opening to coincide with the music festival they’re co-producing at the MSA Annex — Wired Fest.

Speaking of music and loud noises, Decibel will be the coffee sponsor at the Post Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana in July.

They’re bringing a taste of Tucson to the Midwest — a community they’re proud to be a part of.

“We love our city and we are so proud to be a part of the absolutely amazing food scene we have here,” said Gonzo. “At our original location, we’ve always had such good neighbors making such amazing food. The community is always extremely collaborative and supportive of one another. That’s a reflection of the Tucson food community at large. It’s a very exciting community to be a part of.”

In the coming months, Decibel plans to extend its hours to 7 a.m.–8 p.m. daily, mirroring the MSA Annex location.

Decibel Coffee Works’ new shop is located at 2631 E. Broadway Blvd., and the original can be found at 267 S. Avenida Del Convento (MSA Annex). For more information, visit decibelcoffeeworks.com and follow Decibel on Instagram.

Matt Sterner

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
