Mexico City’s famed Taquería El Califa de León, the world’s only Michelin-starred taco stand, is bringing its award-winning tacos to Tucson. The family-run taquería will host a 12-day pop-up at Main Gate Square from Sept. 3 to 14. The event is a collaboration with the Agave House and is organized by GrinGO.
“For 56 years, El Califa de León in Mexico City has been considered a coveted taqueria and best-kept local secret,” said Brian Krupski, founder of GrinGO. “We’re excited to bring the taste of Mexico City back to Arizona. This collaboration with El Califa de León and the Agave House gives Arizonans another rare opportunity to experience one of the best tacos in the world, without leaving the state, right here in the heart of Tucson.”
Michelin-Star Tacos Arrive in Tucson
El Califa de León’s Tucson pop-up gives Arizona food lovers a chance to sample Michelin-starred tacos without leaving the state. The team will serve its signature Taco Gaonera, a tender beef filet taco seasoned with salt and lime, alongside other classic offerings.

The taquería earned global acclaim in 2024 when it became the first taco stand ever to receive a Michelin star. The Michelin Guide praised the Gaonera taco as “exceptional,” highlighting its simplicity and quality. The honor underscores a growing recognition that street food can reach world-class standards; similar accolades for hawker stalls in Singapore and Bangkok marked the same shift.

From Mexico City Streets to Arizona
Founded in 1968, El Califa de León built its reputation on quality meat, handmade tortillas, and time-honored technique. The Taco Gaonera, named after bullfighter Rodolfo Gaona, reflects the taquería’s cultural roots. Its preparation, using a single cut of beef filet, results in a uniquely tender taco.
When Michelin announced the star, long lines formed outside the 100-square-foot stand. Locals and tourists alike waited hours for a taste.
Bringing the Flavor to Tucson
Earlier this year, El Califa de León hosted a successful pop-up in Tempe. A ribbon-cutting will mark the opening day on Sept. 3. Guests should expect lines, as quantities will be limited to preserve quality.
The event will take place at 994 E. University Blvd. For more information, visit tacobouttucson.com.
