Every great cultivator’s story starts with passion, perseverance, and a natural gift the soil seems to recognize. Like Thomas Edison, whose teachers once declared him “too stupid to learn anything” before he went on to hold 1,093 patents — and inadvertently revolutionize indoor cannabis cultivation — Justin McKenzie has spent decades quietly building mastery, and now McKenzie Farms is his moment to let the flower speak for itself.
With a philosophy of quality over quantity and deep roots in the Tucson community, McKenzie Farms represents the culmination of a lifetime of growing — and a new chapter for Arizona cannabis.
McKenzie’s cannabis journey began like many others — with curiosity and a single puff at age 13. But his path was perhaps predetermined by genetics of a different kind: a father who was a grower and a natural “green thumb” inheritance that would shape his entire future. “I’ve been growing for 20-plus years,” McKenzie reflects, “starting in a rinky-dink trailer out in Vail.”
His journey took him from experimental grows with “Kentucky Joe” and Amsterdam seeds to professional cultivation in California, and eventually back to his Tucson roots. Through CBD farming operations, extraction facilities, and various cultivation projects across the years, McKenzie has accumulated a wealth of knowledge that now serves as the foundation for McKenzie Farms.
McKenzie’s approach to cannabis cultivation challenges industry norms.
“THC doesn’t make the flower,” he insists. “The terpenes and the secondary cannabinoids are giving you the effect from the THC.”
This philosophy guides everything — from genetic selection to growing methods — and is what separates McKenzie Farms from the pack.
What makes McKenzie Farms more than just a grow operation is the people behind it. McKenzie has always valued a tight-knit, collaborative team where everyone works across all aspects of the operation.
“We have a really small crew, everyone works together on all aspects — it’s a fun place to work,” he shares. That culture of care and craft carries directly into the product.
Justin McKenzie isn’t just growing cannabis — he’s growing something bigger: a standard for what Arizona-crafted flower can and should be. With McKenzie Farms, Tucson has a cultivator who has paid his dues, refined his craft across two decades, and is ready to show the market what happens when you prioritize the plant above all else.
