The 31st annual Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is the largest food drive of the year for the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona.
It’s a wonderful benefit for the Community Food Bank and it’s all happening on Saturday, May 13. Historically, the drive has been a huge success and brings in much-needed food donations to stock their local food pantries for summer. This year, they’re hoping to collect 250,000 pounds of food.

Most Needed Non-Perishable Food Items:
- Peanut Butter
- Oatmeal, cereal, and granola bars
- Canned tomato products
- Canned tuna and chicken
- Canned soups
- Canned vegetables
- Canned fruit
- Rice and pasta
- Packaged nuts and seeds
How to Participate
To pitch in, collect a bag of non-perishable food and set it out by your mailbox on Saturday, May 13 to be picked up by your letter carrier or a Community Food Bank volunteer.
There are more ways to donate, too. For example, if you don’t have anything to bag up and leave outside, you can donate to the Community Food Bank online at donate.communityfoodbank.org.

Want to Volunteer?
If you’d like to give back in another way and form, you can also be a volunteer to support the drive by signing up to collect food at the post offices.
“We are recruiting hard for volunteers – it takes 400 of them to make this all work,” said Norma Cable, Public Relations Manager at the Community Food Bank.

If you’re interested, email volunteer@communityfoodbank.org or sign up online. “We need volunteers to help collect and sort food at post offices across Tucson, Green Valley, and Nogales,” the Community Food Bank shared.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
