Agave Heritage Week is once again taking over parts of Tucson with its annual Agave Heritage Festival from Tuesday, April 23 – Sunday, May 5.

This year, look for agave tastings, seminars, art exhibits, garden tours, world-class culinary events, and much more.

One of the new events featured this year is the Agave Expo happening on the plaza at Hotel Congress. The area is revamped into a one-stop-shop for agave, showcasing different varieties of the plant in seminars, workshops, and on paper as Ron Parker signs copies of his book Chasing Centuries.

Additional events and revised events will join the celebration, such as the downtown stroll known as the MEZCrawl and the Agave Heritage Dinner.

With the number of events happening throughout the week, you’ll need to plan wisely for the sake of agave.

There will also be an agave fiber crafts demo and mescal tasting.

It’s from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Mission Garden and tickets are $45 per person or $15 if you’re under 21 years old.

Mission Garden is located at 946 W. Mission Ln. For more information, visit agaveheritagefestival.com.

More about Matt

At a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.

He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.

If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.

Between the pools, hot spring and cold plunge, water slide, yoga, live music, complimentary bike rentals, and their nostalgic “Summer Rewind” experience, there was always something to do. We never left the resort.

The highlight at their on-site restaurant, Epazote Kitchen & Cocktails, was the Pollo Con Rajas - perfectly cooked chicken over a rich creamed poblano, onion, and corn mestizaje. And if you’re at their Sundance Café for breakfast, get the pozole. It’s made from a family recipe that became such a guest favorite it earned a permanent spot on the menu.

Although El Conquistador licenses the Hilton brand, it’s owned and operated by a local company. The culinary team sources much of its meat and produce from Arizona.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or just looking for an incredible dinner with Catalina Mountain views, this spot is worth adding to your list. 🌵🌞
