The team behind The Citizen Hotel, which is operated by the same group affiliated with the Downtown Clifton Hotel and Red Light Lounge, announce they’ll be closing its doors at the end of the month. The last night to enjoy a cocktail or beer at the bar is Saturday, May 20.
The hotel, which opened in February 2022 inside the former Tucson Citizen newspaper building (all of the printing press was located in the basement), quickly garnered a lot of attention — even on a national level by TIME magazine.
The reason behind the closure is unclear but the following information was shared on Instagram about the closure:
“We are so thankful for our awesome staff and the enthusiasm we received from the public! We are honored to have had you all as guests, to host your events, and to provide space for the community.”

Again, the very last night The Citizen Hotel’s lobby bar will be serving is Saturday, May 20. The team will be offering daily specials from now until then, too. The bar’s hours of operation (at the moment) are 4 – 10 p.m. on Tuesday – Thursday, 2 p.m. – midnight on Friday – Saturday, and 2 – 10 p.m. on Sunday.
“After that, we are still here to serve you at our sister hotel, the Downtown Clifton. See you across the bar.”
The Citizen Hotel is located at 82 S. Stone Ave. For more information, visit thecitizenhoteltucson.com.

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
