The team behind El Chinito Gordo announced that they will soon permanently close the Mexican restaurant at 2920 N. Oracle Rd.
The last day to enjoy a warm meal and cold margarita is Saturday, May 24. They’ll be open 11 a.m. – 9 p.m.
They shared the following about the closure:
“After five unforgettable years, we will be closing our Mexican restaurant El Chinito Gordo
on Saturday, May 24. Thank you, Mark, Felicia, Lenny, May, Mr. Mark, and so many more to be thankful for. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank our family, friends, team, and our amazing community for your amazing support.”
El Chinito Gordo opened in early December 2020 in the former Club 21 Mexican Food spot, which was in business for 73 years.
“Join us in these final days as we celebrate together with the delicious food and drinks you’ve come to love. Your kindness, love, and encouragement have meant everything to us. Throughout this journey, through everyday challenges and even a pandemic — we’ve learned, grown, and built lasting friendships.”
Felicia Chavez opened the restaurant along with architect Mark Bonillas and The Bamboo Terrace co-owners Lenny Mark and Blanca Mark.
“Though this chapter is closing, we’ll continue on at Bamboo Terrace — we’d love for you to stop by and say hello. Mil gracias de todo corazón.”
Again, the last day to stop by is Saturday, May 24, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Although stop by much sooner and wish the team well!

Matt Sterner
More about MattAt a very young age, Matt Sterner was gifted with the artistic ability to masterfully roll a burrito to the highest of standards, but the wrapped medley of delicious innards wasn’t his first love. Matt’s first true love was a combination of reading, writing, and creating. He grew up reading comics, the ingredients list of his shampoo and conditioner bottles, choose-your-own-adventure books, and the Scrabble dictionary — something he found useful when challenging his grandmother to a game.
He attended college at New Mexico State University and graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. One of his favorite classes was screenwriting because he became responsible for the story’s birth before it came to life on-screen. After school, Matt took on numerous positions at a local television station in Tucson. From dealing out stories about heartbreak to producing “fluffier” content for a lifestyle broadcast, he learned what it takes to adapt to the many emotions the world of media can stir. Since 2017, Matt has dabbled in the culinary world of Tucson as well as San Diego, California from time to time.
If you’re in the mood for strange stories, head over to his pride and joy, wonkytimes.com. And in case you’re curious — yes, after all of this time, he still manages to roll a killer burrito.
