Unless you frequent Tucson’s Southeast neighborhoods by Davis Monthan Air Force Base, you may not be aware of Mama Louisa’s, an old-school Italian eatery. The family-owned restaurant has been serving up their traditional recipes in Tucson since 1956, meaning you have nearly 60 years of pasta to catch up on.

“It all starts at about 7am daily with fresh, homemade pastas…then, with care and attention, family members follow traditional Italian recipes, many brought to this country by our grandmother,” states the Mama Louisa’s website. “It takes time to prepare food this way, but it’s the only way we know how, it’s the only way we will do it.”

On December 1 at 6pm, chef Michael Elefante, formerly of the Ritz Carlton Dove Mountain,  is offering a surprisingly upscale four-course introduction to the restaurant. Elefante’s grandfather, Joseph Elefante Sr., was the original executive chef and owner of Mama Louisa’s.

Each course, from Butternut Squash Risotto with Seared Scallops to Frangelico Creme Brûlée, will be paired with an appropriate wine. All for only $45 per person.

Mama Louisa’s Wine Dinner Menu

1st Course

  • St. Maria Greens, Cinnamon & Balsamic Poached Pear, Ricotta Salata, Walnut Brittle
  • Wine Pairing – Blanc De Blue Sparkling Chardonnay

2nd Course

  • Butternut Squash Risotto, Marscapone, Seared Scallops, Cranberry Gastrique, Micro Greens
  • Wine Pairing – Terra D’Oro Chenin Blanc

3rd Course

  • Porcini Mushroom Sacchetti, Brussels Leaves, Roasted Garlic Jus, Soppressata Tuile
  • Wine Pairing – Angeline Pinot Noir

Dessert

  • Spumoni Terrine, Frangelico Creme Brulee
  • Wine Pairing – Terro D’Oro Zinfandel Port

“Running this kitchen has been a labor of love, but the numbers just aren’t adding up anymore, and as parents, we have to make the hard choice to step back and take care of what matters most at home.”

Tucson’s food scene draws people to the city year-round. Locals and visitors alike also appreciate the chance to eat outdoors from October through April, when daytime highs often settle in the 60s and 70s. Even on “cold” evenings, a patio with a heater or fire pit keeps dinner comfortable.

Whether you want a quiet brunch, a lively happy hour, or a long dinner under the stars, this list offers a place to start. Check each restaurant’s hours before you go, since patio seating may vary by weather and season. More details on Tucsonfoodie.com.🌞
